Start with your fertile window
Pregnancy is most likely from sex in the few days before ovulation and on the day of it. The cycle calculator gives a rough estimate. Ovulation tests or temperature charting can narrow it down, especially if your cycles vary in length.
Get ready before you conceive
- Folic acid: health authorities recommend 400 micrograms of folic acid a day for anyone who could become pregnant, starting before conception, to reduce the risk of certain birth defects. Many prenatal vitamins include it.
- A preconception checkup to review medications, vaccinations, and any health conditions.
- Check supplements and herbal products with a doctor or pharmacist, since some aren't recommended while trying to conceive or during pregnancy.

Doctors generally suggest getting checked if you haven't conceived after a year of trying, or after six months if you're 35 or older. Go sooner if your cycles are very irregular or you have a known condition.
